Common Questions About Baptism

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM?

It points to the burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“Christ died for our sins… He was buried… and He rose again.” [1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4]

That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. [ROMANS 6:3-4]

It characterizes my new life as a Christian.
“When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!”  [2 CORINTHIANS 5:17]

Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ.”  [COLOSSIANS 2:12]

WHY BE BAPTIZED BY IMMERSION IN WATER?

Because Jesus was baptized that way.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.” [MATTHEW 3:16]

Baptisms in the Bible were by immersion.

“…then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water…”  [ACTS 8:38-39]

The word Baptize means “To dip under water”
The Greek work Baptizo means “To immerse or dip under water”.
It best symbolized a burial and resurrection!

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?

Every person who believes in Jesus Christ.
“Those who believe and accepted His message were baptized…”  [ACTS 2:41]

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News of the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.”  [ACTS 8:12]
