Missing the Basics

One of the illustrations from this week was the idea of showing up to Grade 12 math without learning the basics first. Everyone else understands what’s happening—but you’re completely lost. Not because you’re dumb, but because you missed learning and applying the foundation.

Faith works the same way.

A strong faith isn’t built only on emotional moments at youth camp or hype worship nights. Those moments matter—but faith that lasts is built on understanding who Jesus is and learning how to follow Him daily.

You can’t build a strong faith in Jesus, or life for that matter, if you skip the foundation.

Sometimes life can look solid on the outside… until pressure hits.

School stress. Friend drama. Anxiety. Temptation. Questions about faith. Family struggles. The truth is: storms reveal what our lives are actually built on.

That’s exactly what Jesus talks about at the end of the Sermon on the Mount. He gives a picture of two builders—one wise and one foolish. Both build houses. Both face storms. But only one house stands.

Big Idea

A strong life starts with a solid foundation—and Jesus is the only foundation that holds.

The Scripture

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
— Matthew 7:24

Jesus says the difference between the wise builder and the foolish builder isn’t hearing truth—it’s what they do with that truth.

One builds on the rock.
One builds on sand.

The storm hits both. But only one survives.

What Does the Rock Represent?

The rock represents Jesus and His teachings. He says “whoever hears these words of mine”, referring to the sermon on the mount that he just taught from chapters 5-7. It’s choosing to trust Him, follow Him, and actually live out what He says.

Building on the rock can look like this:

  • Understand our need for a Saviour (5:3)
  • letting your light shine (5:16)
  • Living a life honouring God, not for PERFORMANCE but with right MOTIVES (5:20)
  • Don’t pay back evil with evil (5:39)
  • Give, pray, fast without a desire for others to notice (6:1-18)
  • Don’t serve two masters (6:24)
  • Understand your worth with God, and live contempt (6:25-32)
  • Seek first His Kingdom (6:33)
  • deal with your own sin before pointing it out in others (7:1-6)
  • Do to others as you would have them do to you (7:12)

A foundation isn’t flashy—but it’s what holds everything together.

What Does the Sand Represent?

The sand represents building your life on anything other than Jesus teachings.

Building on the sand can look like this:

  • believing you don’t need a Saviour
  • Hiding that you are a Christian
  • Only doing good things so others think you are good
  • When someone hurts you, hurt them back because they deserve it
  • Give, pray, fast so that people think you are holy
  • Be comfortable serving both God and the world
  • Live worried about life 24/7, don’t believe God cares about your needs
  • Seek your own kingdom before God’s kingdom
  • Point out other people’s flaws before worrying about your own so you feel better about yourself
  • Only treat people how they treat you

The problem? Sand shifts.

Feelings change. Popular opinions change. Trends change. But Jesus doesn’t.

If your foundation constantly changes, your life will feel unstable too.

Why This Matters

Every day, you’re building something.

The question is: what are you building on?

A relationship with Jesus isn’t just meant for Sundays or youth nights. It becomes the foundation for:

  • Your identity
  • Your decisions
  • Your friendships
  • Your future
  • Your purpose

Storms will come. Jesus never promised life would be easy. But He did promise that a life built on Him will stand.

Reflection Questions

  • What do you think people your age are building their lives on right now?
  • Why do you think Jesus compares life to building a house?
  • What does it practically look like to “build your life on Jesus”?
  • What’s one area of life where it’s easy to trust culture instead of God?

Weekly Challenge

Take 10 minutes this week to read Matthew 5–7 (the Sermon on the Mount).

As you read, ask yourself:

“What part of my life is Jesus asking me to build differently?”

Short Prayer

Jesus, help me build my life on You. When life gets difficult, remind me that You are steady, trustworthy, and unchanging. Teach me to not just hear Your words, but to live them out every day. Amen.
