We’ve been travelling through our Roadmaps series, looking at how Jesus gives us a path for “wholehearted living.” In the first two weeks, we talked about how our direction determines our destination and how Jesus relocates the “bar” of obedience from just our outward behaviour to the deep motives of our hearts.
This week, we took a turn into Matthew 6, where Jesus gets incredibly practical about our “secret life.” He talks about three big things: giving to the needy, praying, and fasting.
The Big Idea
God cares about who you are when no one is watching because that is where your true character is built. Your Father, who sees in secret, is building something in you that will be unshakable.
Key Scripture (Matthew 6:1-18)
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 6:1
Jesus isn’t saying that doing good things is bad. He’s telling us that the motive behind why we do them matters more than the performance itself. If we are just “performing” to look like the perfect Christian, we’re actually moving off the road and toward selfishness.
4 Key Takeaways
- Motive > Performance: It is possible to do the “right” things for the “wrong” reasons. Jesus isn’t interested in a show; He wants closeness. If our goal is intimacy (a close friendship) with God, we don’t need to hunt for the approval of our friends.
- The Reward Trap: When we do things to be “seen” (like making sure everyone knows we’re praying or being kind), the temporary approval we get from people is the only reward we’ll receive. But when we do things in secret, we receive a lasting reward from our Father who sees us. Jesus talks about this three separate times in this group of verses!
- The Danger of Spiritual Image Management: We live in a world of social media where we are experts at managing our image. But spiritual image management is exhausting because we always fall short of the version of ourselves we try to project. Which often leads us to believe we are frauds and so is everyone else… this is where the enemy often plays mind games with us.
- The Prayer Roadmap: Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13) as a re-centering tool. It’s a way to pull our hearts away from our own needs and performance and realign them with God’s will and His control.
Why This Matters
In your daily life—at school, on sports teams, or at home—it’s easy to feel pressure to “look the part.” But Jesus wants to equip you for your WHOLE LIFE, not just the parts people see. When you focus on your hidden devotion, you stop living for the “likes” and start living for the only One whose opinion truly defines you. This moves you away from the anxiety of “performance” and into the freedom of God’s love.
Reflection Questions
- Where do you think students feel the most pressure to appear “perfect” or managed today?
- How can we help each other focus on building character (who we are in secret) rather than just “looking good” on the outside?
- Why is the “motive” behind our actions so important to God?
- How can using the Lord’s Prayer this week help us re-align with God’s heart?
Weekly Challenge
This week, find one way to serve someone or do something kind in secret. Don’t post about it, don’t tell your best friend, and don’t tell your parents. Just do it for God and see how it changes your heart.
A Short Prayer
“Father, help me to stop living for the approval of others and start seeking intimacy with You. Clean up my motives and build something unshakable in my heart that stays true even when no one is watching. Amen.”
